The test report form (TRF) includes your overall band score and the band scores for each of the four sections:

Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.

Overall Band Score

The overall band score is the average of the four sections, rounded to the nearest whole or half point. The scores of the sections carry equal weight.

If the score of a particular section ends in 0.25, the final band score is rounded up to the nearest half band, and if it ends in 0.75, the total band score is rounded up to the nearest whole band.

How IELTS band scores are calculated

1. Listening

The IELTS listening test contains 40 questions. Each correct answer is awarded one mark. Scores from 40 questions are converted to the IELTS nine-band scale. The score is given in whole and half bands.

2. Reading

The IELTS reading test contains 40 questions. Each correct answer is awarded one mark. Scores from 40 questions are converted to the IELTS 9 band scale. The score is given in whole and half bands.

The Academic and General Training Reading Tests are scored on the same scale. The distinction between the two tests is a matter of genre or text type. However, the Academic Reading tests may contain texts that have the more difficult vocabulary or a more complex style. It is common for a General Training Reading Test to require a greater number of questions to be answered correctly in order to achieve a certain score.

3. Writing

Examiners use scoring criteria (Band Score Descriptors) to award a band score for each of the four criteria:

  • Task Achievement (for Task 1)
  • Task Response (for Task 2)
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy
  • Lexical resources
  • Coherence and Cohesion

The criteria are weighted equally and the score for the task is the average.

4. Speaking

Examiners use scoring criteria to award a band score for each of the four criteria:

  • Fluency and Coherence
  • Grammatical range and accuracy
  • Lexical resources
  • Pronunciation

The criteria are weighted equally and the score in the Speaking section is the average.
